AoTW- Is Harvard being Discriminatory to Stop Discrimination?

This article talks about Harvard university limiting the number of Asian- American students accepted into the college. As well as the controversy surrounding race and acceptance into not only Harvard but colleges of all levels.

With the racial division of the country right now I can understand the complexity of the situation Harvard and other colleges are facing. They want to keep the ethnic ratios balanced while at the same time they don’t want to discriminate against a group of people in order to keep it balanced. Some people believe that Harvard is more selective to Asian-American applicants and I think that that is very unfair. People who put in the work and earn their way into Harvard, or any other school, should be accepted regardless of their race. But, on the other hand if race is not considered that could make it difficult for schools to keep a diverse student body. This means that whatever group of people has the highest application rate would probably have the most prominent ethnicity. I don’t know what the applicant percentage is in Harvard so I’m not sure if eliminating race would keep a diverse student body or show a drastic number of more people from a single race. I do think because of schools need to keep a diverse student body that it is possible for Harvard to have purposely limited or become more selective towards Asian- Americans applicants. John Roberts wrote, “The only way to stop discriminating on race is to stop discriminating on race.” I agree with that statement but in such a race-conscious society it can be hard to completely eliminate race because even if Harvard isn't looking at race other people might. If people see an uneven ethnic population at the school it could spark even more controversy which is the opposite of what Harvard wants. The community, on the other hand, could greet that with praise and admire the schools' decision to eliminate race. Opinions may be split its hard to tell and so I can see how it would be hard to make that decision.

After reading the article my opinion is torn, as much as I think it is completely wrong to become more selective to a specific group of people I see the need for the school to be conscious of the ethnic ratios. Maybe the solution is to “stop discriminating race to stop discriminating race” or maybe that is too simple for such a complex situation like this one.
